Taiwanese politician calls to solve the problem of Taiwan's 'leftover' single women print version

"Even when importing beef we want to protect our local Taiwanese meat, so let alone when we are talking about people" - Taiwanese politician Zhang Xiaofeng doesn't understand how Taiwanese men allow themselves to marry foreign spouses and neglect the local 'meat'. While in mainland China there are millions of men who cannot find a spouse, in Taiwan the single women appear to be a majority. How about organizing speed dating between mainland men and island women accross the Formosa Strait?

According to a report by Taiwan's United Daily News, famous Taiwanese author and representative of the People First Party, Zhang Xiaofeng, discussed marriage problems during an assembly at Taiwan's legislation body. Zhang believes that because many Taiwanese men marry foreign women, there are many 'sheng nǚ' ('leftover' single women).

Zhang Xiaofeng explained to the media that the word 'sheng nǚ' comes from mainland China. She lends this term in order to emphasize that although there are many excellent Taiwanese women and potential mothers, because 460,000 men married foreign women, the Taiwanese women 'marriage market' lost 460,000.

Zhang Xiaofeng stressed that she is by no means depreciating these Taiwanese women, but feels sorry for them. She suggested that if the standards of Taiwanese women are too high then Taiwanese men must improve themselves; 'even when importing beef we want to protect our local Taiwanese meat, so let alone when we are talking about people'.

Zhang said that although marrying a foreign spouse cannot be prohibited, she still hopes that the legislation body pays attention to the phenomenon of women who lose the opportunity to marry, and think of an initiative that could give them marriage possibilities.
