Recently, the general office of the Ministry of Education has published a notice, demanding the inclusion of 'sex education' and 'romance education' in the university courses, making it a compulsory course within the content of 'mental health education' courses. This notice has immediately evoked the attention of society.
The initiation of mental health education courses in different schools has some variations. In Guangxi Normal University, only psychology students can attend the 'sex-psychology guidance' class, while other students who wish to study such content can only learn a small portion of knowledge through the school's 'mental-health education' courses. In most universities 'mental health education' is an optional course. In other schools, although such course is optional, school authorities advise new students to select it, making it almost 'compulsory'.
In the Guangxi Finance & Economics College, the 'mental health education' class, taught by professor Ai Jun, is an optional course attended by 120 students. As professor Ai teaches 'sensitive' content, providing some explanations, his goal is not only to make students confront such issues in a sincere fashion, but also make them understand 'how to regard homosexuality', 'pre-marital sex' and other discussion topics. Yet, in some universities, the content of 'sex psychology' and 'romance psychology' is ordinary, lacking new ideas and understandably making some students dissatisfied: "Everything the teacher says can be found on the internet."
Professor of the School of Education in Guangxi University, psychology doctor Tan Xianzheng, says that according to his understanding, the proportion of school students that are in a romantic relationship is about 25%. No matter whether the percentage is high or low, the school undertakes the responsibility to exercise 'romance education' and 'sex responsibility guidance'. Tan Xianzheng says that when providing psychological counseling to students, he found out that dormitory interpersonal relationships, the pressure of finding a job and other psychological problems are also common. Some education personnel say that in reality, the social 'selective attention' reflects the apprehensiveness of society towards the state of on-campus sex-education. Yet, in order to answer the student requirements, other issues should receive attention, as well. After all, 'sex-education' is only a small part of university mental-health education.
