The Japan's Nagoya mayor denies the 'Nanjing Massacre', the Chinese Foreign Ministry condemns print version
level 3

On February 20, the mayor of the Japanese city of Nagoya, He Cunlong, when mentioning the "Nanjing Massacre" in an assembly with Nanjing city officials, declared that this event did not happen. Director of the memorial hall of the Nanjing Massacre claimed that this statement is unacceptable and that He Cunlong is mistaking the historical facts. He said: "The Nagoya mayor's statement concerning this chapter of the Sino-Japanese history is very irresponsible. Determining history from one's own subjective position is not serious.  The war crimes of the Nanjing Massacre were verified by the court verdict of the Far East International Military Tribune. Whoever denies these historical facts is ignoring the past suffering of all the massacre's survivors. "

Spokesman of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Hong Lei, also responded by saying that the Nanjing Massacre is a brutal crime that the Japanese Militarism had committed. The international society had determined this long ago.

According to the Japanese Sankei Shimbun newspaper, He Cunlong said the following statement on February 20: "It cannot be denied that during the 1937 Nanjing incident there was normal warfare taking place, which is a pity, but what people refer to as "the Nanjing Incident" couldn't have taken place." He also said: "Since it is impossible all along to ascertain the exact truth of the matters, the Sino-Japanese relations are always in a complicated state."

It is said that He's father served as a ranked soldier and participated in the Nanjing Massacre.
