'Lixing aiguo', 'loving the country rationally' is becoming a new popular term, expressing the need to refrain from violence in the anti-Japanese protests that are taking place throughout China. Between the lines of this and other articles advocating for 'rational patriotism' there is no soft spot for Japan, but rather a desire to avoid social disturbance and a strong awareness that violence displays China in an unfavorable light in front of the international community.

'Rational patriotism' in Beijing, holding portraits of not the most 'rational' of leaders...

Beijingers have made an 'announcement' to the entire country, saying that being patriotic requires rationality, and that people who are genuinely patriotic cannot be violent to their compatriots.

On September 15, a crowd of over a thousand people made a protest in front of the Japanese embassy, objecting the Japanese government's illegal act of 'purchasing' the Diaoyu Island. They shouted "our sovereign rights at the territory cannot be violated". The demonstrators were arranged in organized groups and did not behave in an extreme manner. The police at the site maintained order. Restaurants of Japanese food at the neighborhood suspended business yesterday and hanged the Chinese flags on their gates. The Department of Public Security of the Beijing municipality posted a message on its Weibo account, expressing gratitude for the 'rational protest' of the crowd near the Japanese embassy.

Demonstrations were held in many different places in China. Among these events, some 'irrational' behavior that took place was regretful. Some Japanese media reports 'gloated at the other's misfortune', saying that the Chinese protest is becoming savage and could lead to unrest in the Chinese society.

In the globalized reality nowadays, we must let the world see that 'peace' dominates China, that our administration is progressive and that the 'quality' (suzhi) of the entire nationality is on the rise. 'Loving the country rationally, sparing no effort to become a strong country, administrating the country meticulously' - only this manner can truly defend the dignity of China and its people.
