在"两会"[1]期间，全国政协[2]女委员张晓梅建议，希望把"妇女节"更名为"女人节"[3]，以此表示对现代女性的尊重，也让节日深入人心。此提案一出来，得到社会各界的响应。
3月6日，张晓梅在本届政协会议有一个议案，就是将"三八妇女节"更名为"女人节"或"女子节"，以"体现一种人文关怀"。
张晓梅说，现代知识女性自尊、自强、自立，而"妇女"这个词源自"家庭妇女"，暗示年龄偏大和没有文化的人，故不太受欢迎。现代女性，特别是年轻的知识女性，不喜欢甚至排斥被称为"妇女"。这个节日并没有深入人心，这没能充分体现妇女节本应有的意义。
在采访中，几位女性都认同，"妇女"这一称呼对女性表示出不尊重，如果有人用这个词称呼她们，她们不能接受。现代女性的知识、文化水平和地位都有很大提高，希望提案早日通过。
记者采访了南昌市妇联[4]发展部的翁部长。翁部长得知全国政协女委员提议把"妇女节"更名为"女人节"，表示出极大地赞同。他还表示，作为世界性的"妇女节"，应该了解广大女性的心理特点，才能让这个节日受欢迎，而"女人节"这个名字富含女人味道，能体现"不分年龄"、"无论大小"、"不分层次"，是全国所有女性的节日，因此她十分支持张晓梅委员的这个提案。
During the time of the 'Double Conference', female committee member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Zhang Xiaomei, has proposed to change the name of 'funu (妇女) jie' (International Women's Day) to 'nu ren (女人) jie', this way expressing respect towards the female sex in the contemporary age, and allowing this holiday to penetrate deeper into people's minds. As this proposal came out it received responses from all circles of society.
On March 6th, Zhang Xiaomei had a proposal during the current CPPCC session, changing the name of 'March 8th 妇女 day' to '女人 day' or '女子 day', this way reflecting a more humanity sentiment.
Zhang Xiaomei said that the modern knowledgeable female possesses self-esteem, self-improvement, stands on her own feet, yet the word '妇女' originates from 'housewife', reflecting a person of a quite old age who isn't well educated, therefore this day isn't well liked. Contemporary woman, especially the younger 'knowledgeable' women, don't like and even repel being called '妇女'. This special day didn't penetrate into people's minds, and cannot fully reflect the significance 'women's day' ought to have.
When interviewed, several women have all agreed that the term '妇女' doesn't express respect towards women, and that if a person uses this word to address them they would not accept it. The knowledge and cultural level of contemporary women, as well as their status have improved prominently, thus they hope that the proposal would pass soon.
Reporter interviewed the head of Development department of the Women's Federation in Nanchang (capital of Jiangxi province), Weng. Weng has learned about the proposal of the female member of the CPPCC to Change the name "'妇女' Day" to "'女人' Day", and expresses complete approval. She also said that as an international 'women's day', it should reflect an understanding of the psychological characteristics of the wide range of women, only then this day could become well acknowledged. Furthermore, the name "'女人' day" comprises of a thick women's flavor, and can reflect a 'non-distinguished age', 'regardless of old or young', 'regardless of one's position'. It is a day for the women of the entire country, therefore Weng fully supports this proposal by committee member Zhang Xiaomei.

Since ' fùnǚ - 妇女' is a word which has a traditional to some extent and also means 'wife', some believe that when selecting a name for the women's day, China should choose a word which can be associated also to more 'independent' women. '女人 - nǚrén' is a word that is more neutral and refers more to the female sex than to 'wives', therefore it doesn't comprise any chauvinist flavor.
[4] 妇联 fù lián - Women's Federation, or 'All-China Women's Federation', (中华全国妇女联合会), an organization established in the early days of the PRC, with the objective of protecting women's rights, promoting equality between sexes (compared to traditional Chinese values) and providing support for women in many issues. Today the Fu lian are treated more as an NGO, though they are still very likely to be in accord with ideas expressed by the Communist Party.
