The blind human rights activist Chen Guangcheng left the American Embassy in Beijing, yet it remains unclear how he will be treated and how this awkward event affect sino-US relations. Now China criticizes the US act, while the US is probably glad that it managed to take Chen out of its custody and prevent a serious clash with China.

On May 2, spokeperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Liu Weimin, made a public statement concerning the Chen Guangcheng issue. In the end of April, Chen Guangcheng entered the US Embassy in China and left it by himself six days later.

Liu Weimin said that the improper way that the US embassy brought a Chinese citizen into its own jurisdiction is interfering with China's domestic affairs and China cannot accept this. China demands that the US apologizes, investigates this incident, handles (punishes) the people involved and ensures that such incident does not happen again.

Liu Weimin also said that the US should seriously rethink its policy and operations. He restated that China administers its own country and the lawful rights of its citizens are all protected by law.

According to the American Fox News website, US secretary of state Hillary Clinton issued a written announcement. It said that she is happy that the US could arrange for Chen Guangcheng to stay at its embassy and later leave it. Other high-ranking American officials said that the Chen Guangcheng incident is an exceptional case and it is unlikely that such thing could happen once more.
